A source has confirmed to the Newsplex that junior quarterback Michael Rocco is leaving the Virginia football team.
Roanoke Times reporter Doug Doughty broke the news on Twitter on Saturday afternoon that Rocco had been granted his release. Doughty says Rocco hopes to land at an FBS school, where he can redshirt in 2013 and play as a fifth-year senior in 2014.
Rocco has started 21 of 25 games for Virginia over the past two seasons. He began 2012 as the Cavaliers' starter before losing the job to sophomore Phillip Sims, who transferred from Alabama this past summer. Rocco and Sims rotated series for Virginia's final four games.
In 30 games at Virginia, Rocco completed 396-of-657 passes for 4,731 yards, with 27 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.
