Selenski Becomes UVa Career Points Leader in Cavaliers Win

Senior forward Paige Selenski became Virginia’s all-time career leader in points as the seventh-ranked field hockey team defeated No. 22 Duke, 3-1.

Selenski came into the game with 228 career points, two shy of the Virginia program record of 230 scored by Meredith Thorpe scored during her playing career (1995-98).

Selenski earned her first point just over seven minutes into the game. She took a shot on goal that pinged off the side of the cage and then tapped the rebound to teammate Rachel Sumfest who scored to give the Cavaliers the early 1-0 lead and Selenski an assist.

After Duke tied the score off a penalty corner, Selenski scored what would become her conference-leading seventh game-winner of the season. Selenski, with four defenders in pursuit, dribbled down the left sideline into the circle, freeing up space and firing off an on-target shot.

Sumfest added an insurance goal in the second half, positioning herself at the front of the cage as Elly Buckley sent an on-target pass right to Sumfest’s stick.

Cavalier goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone had a strong defensive stand in the net, coming up with nine saves. Katie Robinson had a pair of blocked shots off Duke penalty corner shots.

With the victory, the Cavaliers improve to 15-3 and finish the regular-season ACC schedule with a mark of 4-1. Virginia will be the No. 2 seed in next week’s ACC Tournament, earning a first-round bye for the first time since 1998. The Cavaliers’ first game will be in the semifinals where they will face the winner of Duke and Maryland on Friday, Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m.

Selenski’s goal and assist gave her three points, giving her sole possession of the top spot on the Cavalier career points list. She is also approaching the career goals-scored mark. She currently has 97, four shy of tying Thorpe for the most in a Cavalier career.
