Stanwick Leads No. 1 Cavs to Victory Over UNC

April 7, 2012

Steele Stanwick netted three goals and assisted four others in the top-ranked Cavaliers 15-10 win over No. 9 North Carolina (8-4, 1-2 ACC) Saturday. Virginia (10-1, 2-0) had eight different goal scorers, including a hat trick from fellow senior Chris Bocklet.

With the win the Cavaliers clinch at least the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament. UVa will host the event on April 20 and 22. Friday's game against Duke will decide the league's top seed.

"I am really proud of the team to come out the second week in a row on the road and perform the way we did," said UVa men's lacrosse head coach Dom Starsia. "It is a real credit to the players and the coaches to get everyone ready for this one. I thought we played very well for most of the game. I would have liked to have a few goals back at the end that we gave them, but I never thought we stopped playing. I thought we played smart and hard throughout."

Virginia opened the game with a 2-0 run, and led 4-2 after a Rob Emery goal with 12:35 left in the second quarter.

The Tar Heels held UVa scoreless the next six minutes and tied the game at 4. From then on the Cavaliers dominated, scoring six straight goals between the second and third quarters. Stanwick scored two goals and added two assists for UVa during the span.

UNC cut UVa's lead to 12-8 with 7:06 left in the game but goals by Ryan Tucker and Stanwick helped the Hoos to a 14-10 advantage with 36 seconds left. Pat Harbeson put away the finale with seven seconds to play.

Virginia returns home Friday April 13 when they host the Duke Blue Devils. The game will be televised live on ESPNU at 6 p.m.
