UVa Coaches to Get Closer Look at QBs This Week

The open practices at The Park are now in the past. Fans are no longer sitting in the stands watching the Virginia football team practice, and media access is limited as well.

Now it's time for Mike London's team to truly get to work.

London said on Tuesday that he hopes to have a preliminary depth chart in place by the end of a scrimmage on Saturday. The Cavaliers are still trying to fill holes in the defensive secondary, and there's still the lingering question at quarterback.

London and his staff will get a closer look at the three players competing for the starting quarterback job -- returning starter Michael Rocco, a junior; true sophomore David Watford; and Alabama transfer Phillip Sims, a redshirt sophomore -- in a closed scrimmage on Wednesday morning.

"It's an audition and we'll see how they perform," London said before Tuesday afternoon's practice.

Rocco started all 13 games for Virginia in 2011, and entered the summer atop the Cavaliers' depth chart. Watford split carries for part of last season before settling in as Rocco's back-up, while Sims arrived at Virginia in May after spending last season as the back-up quarterback on Alabama's BCS title team.

"This should really be the first time that the plays will be called and then they have to execute them," London said of Wednesday's scrimmage. "We'll see what kind of leadership styles and abilities that they have, because it's important that our quarterbacks be the leaders."
