Anthony Poindexter has spent most of his adult life affiliated with the football program at Virginia, either as a player or coach. But Mike London understands why Poindexter has made the decision to move on.
The news broke late last week that Poindexter was leaving his alma mater -- along with fellow defensive assistant Vincent Brown -- to join Bob Diaco's staff at Connecticut. UVa confirmed those departures on Monday, saying Poindexter would be Diaco's defensive coordinator, and Brown would be UConn's co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
“Anthony Poindexter has been a tremendous asset to the University of Virginia both as a player and assistant coach,” London, UVa's head coach, said in the school's release. "He is one of the all-time greats ever to wear a uniform for UVa. His love for this university has been unyielding."
"I have seen him develop over the years into a dynamic and passionate coach and, more importantly, mature to be an exceptional person," London said. "I feel confident Anthony is ready for the opportunity to take on the duties as a defensive coordinator. This is a great opportunity for his professional development.”
As a player at UVa from 1994-98, Poindexter was a two-time All-American safety, a three-time All-ACC selection, and the conference's defensive player of the year as a senior. He spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant coach with the Cavaliers, including the last four years as the safeties coach.
Brown has been on London's staff at UVa the past four seasons, and prior to that spent two years working for London at Richmond. He coached the UVa linebackers for three years, before moving to defensive line coach in 2013.
“Vince has been afforded an opportunity to take on more duties and responsibilities at UConn, and this is a good opportunity for him to continue to advance in the coaching profession," London said.
“I want to wish Vince and Anthony the best and thank them for their efforts at Virginia.”
