The Blue Ridge Bears Squirts ice hockey team got a surprise when they showed up to practice at Main Street Arena Wednesday evening.
The Virginia Ice Hockey Club joined the youngsters for a light practice at the arena.
The Cavaliers saw the opportunity to both help the kids improves their skills and show them how to have fun on the ice in addition to getting out the word on the club team itself.
"We just wanted to get involved with the Blue Ridge Ice Hockey Association. I came down here and didn't really see a big ice hockey community. And we have the privilege of the rink being here so we just wanted to get involved with the little guys and promote some interest in our team and in their organization," explained junior President and Captain Sean Buckhorn.
The Cavs put the Bears through a fun, informal practice with scrimmages and shootouts, which saw many of the youngsters taking on (and in some cases, beating) their ice idols.
"We had our practice today and some of the UVa players came to practice with us. So they were basically the coaches of the practice," said the Bears' Maksim Schroeder. "I felt better than I've ever been on the ice."
"We did scrimmages which were really fun and also shootouts. Those were fun too," added Andrew Farley.
For the Cavaliers like Buckhorn it was a chance to give back to the younger generation like players in the past taught Buckhorn and his teammates.
"I did this growing up with high school players and college players in my area and when I was little I idolized the bigger kids so I'm glad I could return the favor."
