The Virginia softball team opened the 2014 campaign Friday, splitting a pair of games on the first day of the Upstate Classic. The Cavaliers defeated North Carolina Central, 8-1, after dropping the first game of the season, 3-1, to Eastern Michigan.

The Cavaliers picked up their first win under first-year Head Coach Blake Miller after using a six-run sixth inning to break open the lead against the Eagles. Fellow freshman Lindsay Mayer added an RBI single and sophomore Taylor Sarcone singled home two more runs to give UVa an 8-1 advantage.

Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine earned her first win of the season, allowing one unearned run in five innings of work with two strikeouts.

In the first game of the day, Eastern Michigan defeated the Cavaliers, 3-1. UVa scored in the first inning when freshman Katie Park was hit by a pitch with the based loaded, scoring senior Stephanie Harris.
