UVa Tops Bellarmine on Senior Day

The Virginia men's lacrosse team snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday, beating Bellarmine 12-8 at Klöckner Stadium.

Senior attacker Mark Cockerton led the Cavaliers with four goals on senior day. Cockerton and eleven other seniors were honored prior to the matchup against the Knights.

With the win, the Cavaliers, who are ranked ninth in the country, improved to 9-5 on the season. Bellarmine Knights falls to 6-5 with the loss.

Bellarmine struck first, taking a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. The 'Hoos responded with a 3-0 run comprised of three unassisted goals by Rob Emery, Ryan Tucker and Cockerton. The Knights scored again in the final seconds of the first quarter to cut the deficit to one.

Bellarmine went on a 5-2 run and eventually took a 6-5 lead with 5:49 left in the second quarter, but the Cavaliers responded with a run of their own. Greg Coholan scored with 4:22 left in the first half to tie it at 6-6. With 1:07 left before the intermission, Tucker scored his second goal of the game, giving UVa a 7-6 lead going into the break.

"All we kept talking about was playing a complete game, coming back out, we've got more time here," UVa head coach Dom Starsia said of his message to the team at halftime. "Let's do the things that we talk about doing every single day."

The Cavaliers continued their run in the second half. Cockerton scored twice and Pannell scored once, while the Cavaliers defense held the Knights scoreless in the third quarter.

"We kept harping on just playing together, opening our mouths," said senior midfielder Bobby Hill. "We were playing on an island, all of our guys. We're a pretty good defense when we play together and help each other out, so it was more of just an emphasis on talking with everybody and having each others backs. We did that and had a better half."

"We were a little bit better in the second half," added Starsia. "I think we were better defensively, but a little bit better overall, and it was enough to get the 'W' today. We're going to have to do better than this if we want to continue to play in the month of May."

The Cavaliers return to action next Saturday in the ACC Championship Showcase Game against North Carolina. Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
