UVa Blanks Cal to Reach NCAA Quarters

May 18, 2012

The Virginia men’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the eighth consecutive year with a 4-0 victory over No. 14 California on Friday.. The second-ranked Cavaliers (27-1) posted their third shutout victory of the tournament to advance.

“I thought we played a great match today,” said head coach Brian Boland. “I was thrilled with how we came out in doubles. It has been something we have been working a lot on in recent weeks. We played at an extremely high level and that is something that is helpful for us. We did a decent job of carrying that into singles. It was good match. We have a lot of respect for Cal and knew they would be a challenge. We are happy to be moving on to the quarterfinals.”

Virginia will meet another Pac-12 school in the quarterfinals as it faces Stanford (20-8). The 11th-seeded Cardinal upset sixth-seeded Kentucky 4-1 on Friday. It marks the third consecutive national tournament that Virginia and Stanford will meet in the quarterfinals. The Cavaliers won 4-3 at Stanford in last year’s NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and earlier this year downed the Cardinal 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville.

In their first ever matchup with Cal, the Cavaliers needed just 45 minutes to take a 1-0 after a dominating doubles performance. In a contest between two top-six ranked teams at No. 1, fifth-ranked Jarmere Jenkins and Drew Courtney downed sixth-ranked Nick Andrews and Christoffer Konigsfeldt 8-3 to give Virginia the early edge. Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank clinched the opening point for the Cavaliers with their 8-3 win at No. 3 over Gregory Bayane and Andrew Scholnick. In the match that was abandoned at No. 2, Virginia’s Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen led Cal’s Carlos Cueto and Ben McLachlan 7-3.

Virginia carried its momentum into singles, winning all six first sets. Domijan doubled the Cavalier lead as he completed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Andrews at the No. 2 position. Minutes later, Shane extended the lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win of his own, downing Bayane at No. 5 singles. Frank sealed the win and Virginia’s place in the quarterfinals with his 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 over Cueto.

“It was fun today and it was great to be able to close it out,” said Frank. “I felt comfortable out there even though it was my first match at the NCAA Championships. I had a little experience at this level from the National Indoors, even though that was at home. It is very exciting to be here, playing in this environment, in front of some big crowds.”

The Cavaliers’ streak of eight consecutive quarterfinal appearances is tied for the longest active streak in the nation. Both Virginia and Georgia have advanced to at least the quarterfinals every year since 2005.

The NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship continues on Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Center. The Virginia-Stanford quarterfinal is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
