The No. 23 Virginia baseball team used a nine-run fourth inning and a tremendous effort from the bullpen to beat George Washington, 16-4, Wednesday evening at Davenport Field. It was the Cavaliers' 15th straight home win.
Shane Halley picked up the win on the mound for Virginia and led a stellar effort from the bullpen. Nick Howard, Nathaniel Abel and Joel Effertz joined Halley to hold George Washington scoreless over 8.1 innings in relief of starter Barrett O'Neil, who was knocked out in the first inning after giving up four runs and only retiring two batters.
Jared King led the Cavaliers at the plate with two hits and three RBI, including a two-run triple in the big fourth inning. Chris Taylor added a double and three RBI and Derek Fisher, Stephen Bruno and Mitchell Shifflett each knocked in a pair.
Virginia (23-10-1) hosts North Carolina in a big ACC showdown this weekend.
