UVa Women Score OT Win to Advance in WNIT

March 15, 2012

The Virginia women's basketball team defeated Howard University 59-56 in overtime Thursday night to advance to the second round of the WNIT. The Cavaliers will host in-state foe Richmond on Monday night at 7 p.m.

Lexie Gerson led UVa with 18 points, including four key free throws in the final seconds of both regulation and overtime.

Virginia (22-10) trailed 50-48 with :20 remaining in regulation when Gerson hit a pair of foul shots to tie the game at 50. A missed Howard layup sent the game into overtime.

In OT, UVa took the lead on a fast-break layup from Gerson to Ataira Franklin making it 54-53. The Cavaliers then went 6-6 from the free throw line to end the game on top. Ariana Moorer connected on four, while Gerson secured the win with :07 left.

The Cavaliers defeated Richmond 69-56 earlier this season on December 4, 2011.
