The Virginia Women's Tennis team fell to Northwestern, 4-2, at the National Team Indoor Championships at the Boar's Head Sports Club Friday.
The Cavaliers, ranked No. 9 nationally, were the 7th seed in the tournament and the Wildcats are No. 12 in the country.
Northwestern avenged a loss to the Cavaliers in the consolation round of the same event last year.
Virginia got off to a great start as the Cavaliers swept all three doubles matches to win the doubles point. Emily Fraser and Li Xi beat Linda Abu Mushrefova and Veronica Corning at No. 1, 8-5. The No. 2 team of Erin Vierra and Hana Tomljanovic downed Belinda Nui and Nida Hamilton 7-5 and Lindsey Hardenbergh and Maria Fuccillo downed Kate Turvy and Brittany Wowchuk at No. 3.
Fraser won at No. 1 singles over Turvy, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) but Wowchek answered back for the Wildcats at No. 2, dispatching Hardenbergh 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
Xi won the first set at No. 3 over Nui, 7-5, but Nui came back to claim the second, 6-1, and was ahead 3-1 in the third before being forced to exit due to injury.
The Wildcats then claimed the next three matches for the victory. Corning downed Tomljanovic in straight sets at No. 4 and Mushrefova beat Vierra at No. 5, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Hamilton followed with a win at No. 6 over Fuccillo, 6-1, 6-3.
