The UVa and Virginia Tech softball teams split a doubleheader on Saturday that was moved up due to rain. The Cavaliers (21-22, 6-11 ACC) took game one 1-0 in a pitcher's duel that lasted eight innings. Melanie Mitchell earned her sixth career victory on the mound. In game two, the Hokies (33-16, 10-6 ACC) outlasted Virginia 4-2, despite a pair of rain delays lasting more than three hours.
In game one, Senior Giannina Cipolloni had the game-winning RBI that scored teammate Heidi Velk in the top of the eighth inning. On the hill, Mitchell finished with eight strikeouts, including two in the Hokies' final at-bat. She allowed two walks and two hits.
In game two, Tech scored four runs in the first inning, including a two-run homer by Kelsey Maricka. Virginia cut the deficit to 4-2 in the seventh inning, following a rain delay, when junior Kristen Hawkins homered to center field.
Both teams finished with seven hits. They'll conclude the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
