Virginia rising sophomore outfielder Derek Fisher will be swinging for the fences next week in Omaha.
Fisher was announced Thursday as one of eight competitors in the 2012 College Home Run Derby at TD Ameritrade Park next Tuesday. Fisher led the Cavaliers as a team -- and all ACC freshmen -- with seven home runs in 2012.
Fisher is one of three ACC players in the field for the derby. Virginia Tech's Tyler Horan finished third in the conference with 15 homers as a redshirt sophomore this season, and Daniel Palka hit 12 home runs as a sophomore at Georgia Tech.
College of Charleston's Daniel Aldrich, who won the event in 2011, will be back to defend his title next week. Aldrich hit 11 home runs this season. The other competitors include South Carolina's LB Dantzler (10 homers this season); Zach Stephens (18 home runs) of Tennessee Tech; LSU's Mason Katz (13 homers); and Aaron Judge (four home runs) of Fresno State.
CBS-19 will air the College Home Run Derby on tape at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 7.
