The Virginia softball team split a pair of games with Boston College Friday evening at the The Park in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers (13-16, 2-6 ACC) won the first game, 3-2, before falling, 3-2 (nine innings), in the second contest.
In the first game, the Cavaliers scored three in the first inning as junior Marcy Bowdren singled to score senior Taylor Williams and sophomore Heidi Velk. Bowdren came around to score on a bases-loaded walk earned by senior Lauren Didlake.
Senior Melanie Mitchell pitched the complete game for her 73rd career victory (10-9), putting her one shy of the UVa record, set by Lisa Palmer (74). She struck out 10 in seven innings, and is now five shy of 1,000 career strikeouts.
The two teams battled in a pitcher’s duel in the second game, with the Eagles coming away with the 3-2 win in nine innings.
The two teams conclude the series Saturday with a single game scheduled for a noon start.
