Common Ground Healing Arts Community Sit-A-Thon
The Haven, 112 Market St, Charlottesville, VA 22902
Charlottesville, VA - Have you ever wanted to learn how to meditate? Are you an experienced meditator who’d like to put that skill to good use? Mark your calendar for 9-11am on July 13th for an exciting community meditation event that will benefit Common Ground! Pat Coffey, a Senior Teacher in the Insight Meditation tradition, will lead a guided sit in the Sanctuary at the Haven that is appropriate for all levels of meditator, including those who are brand new to meditation. Sitters will leave the event with tangible tools to support their own meditation practice. A reception will follow the sit.
This unique “Sit-A-Thon” concept, styled much like a Walk-a-Thon, invites participants to gather sponsors for a personal meditation challenge. Also like a walk-a-thon, a Sit-AThon is good for the health of its participants. Studies show that meditation is associated with improvement in a variety of psychological areas, including stress, anxiety, addiction, depression, eating disorders and cognitive function, among others. There's also research to suggest that meditation can reduce blood pressure, pain response, and levels of the stress hormone cortisol, while improving the ability of the meditator to respond to stressful situations in more effective ways. The American Health Association estimates that stress is the basic cause of more than 60% of all human illness and disease, earning it the distinction of being the number one proxy killer in the United States today.
Common Ground’s goal is to have 100 people meditate together at this event and to raise $50,000, all of which will go directly toward its charitable care programming this year. Advance registration is available online, although walk-ins are also welcome.
Common Ground’s programs bring complementary health practices such as yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and massage to underserved populations in the city of Charlottesville. Since opening in the Jefferson School City Center in January, it has had more than 4,000 visits to its beautiful wellness space and over 1,200 visits to its outreach programs in locations such as Friendship Court, the Westhaven Nursing Clinic, and the Fluvanna County Correctional Facility for Women.
