Pancakes for Parkinson's

University of Virginia students will host the eighth annual Pancakes for Parkinson’s on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 9:00am to 1:00pm before the home football game against NC State. Pancakes for Parkinson’s is a free pancake breakfast on UVa’s historic Lawn organized to raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research. All proceeds are donated to the foundation, which works to aid research and increase awareness about Parkinson’s disease.

We Rescue Lives: an event to benefit the IRC in Charlottesville

The International Rescue Committee in Charlottesville is hosting We Rescue Lives, the IRC’s annual fundraiser, on Saturday, May 7th, from 6:00-8:00pm at CitySpace on the Downtown Mall. Tickets are $100 ($75 is tax deductible).
Participants will hear moving stories of survival from refugees resettled by the IRC. Stacia Harris, NBC29 news reporter and anchor, will host the event. Hors d’oeuvres and Virginia wine will be served.
Proceeds from We Rescue Lives will directly fund IRC programs in Charlottesville. Participation from community members is a powerful contribution to the IRC’s work leading refugees from harm to home.

Battle of the Badges Flag Football Challenge

Charlottesville and Albemarle Police Officers will take on Charlottesville and Albemarle Professional Firefighters in the first annual Battle of the Badges Flag Football Challenge. Pregame activities will include Bounces and slides courtesy of Bounce Around Amusements. Static Displays and interactive demonstrations from all the area Police and Fire Departments. The Dunk a Chief Dunk Tank featuring area Chiefs willing to take the plunge for charity. Concessions courtesy of the Thomas jefferson Civitan Club. Also featuring a guest appearance from the UVA Football Team. Admission will be $2.00 for this event with all proceeds benefiting the Local Law Enforcement Torch Run and the Central Virginia Burn Camp. Run For the River 5k/10k

Come on out to the Second Annual Run for the River 5k/10k, located just 25 minutes east of downtown Charlottesville. Hit the soft surface and experience the head- waters of the York River Basin and the Green Springs National Historic Landmark District.
Designated in 1974, this area consists of a unique
assemblage of rural examples of century-old ar-
chitecture preserved in their original context.
The landscape, the rural mode of life, and the
blend of buildings in their setting have remained
substantially undisturbed. Even fence lines and
meandering country lanes, mostly unpaved, fol-
low their original course.
Enjoy the view as you run through some of the 14,000 acres within the historic district protected by conservation easements. These easements are designed to maintain the integrity of the historic district for future generations by limiting land divisions, preserving the buildings,
supporting agriculture, and protecting the breathtaking views in the area. The National Park Service, Virginia Outdoors Foundation, Historic Green Springs, Inc.
among others work to see that the easements are upheld and the historic district is preserved in perpetuity.
Run for a Cause. The proceeds from this run will benefit the South Anna Monitoring Project and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. Volunteers from the Green Springs community have been collecting water quality data, moni-
toring the health of the river, and promoting conservation for over eight years. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is a regional nonprofit organization that builds and fosters partnerships to protect and to restore the Bay and its rivers.
All participants will receive a commemorative
finish photo and gift bag.
Pre-registrants will receive a t-shirt.
Overall and age group prizes will be awarded.
Race day registration - 7:00 am to 7:45.
Both races start at 8:00 am.
