STrAY: Found Poems from a Lost Time, Suzanne McClelland

Jan 25, 2013 - May 26, 2013 12 PM - 5 PM

UVa Fralin Museum of Art, 155 Rugby Road / Charlottesville, VA 22904
STrAY: Found Poems from a Lost Time is an in-situ project in which the contemporary artist Suzanne McClelland responds to Found Poems from a Lost Time (2006), twelve epistolary poems written by George Garrett (1929–2008), the renowned poet and esteemed professor of creative writing at U.Va. Garrett's poems, which describe the physical and psychological horrors of war, are constructed from passages lifted from letters written by two soldiers—both his distant relatives—who fought on opposite sides during the American Civil War. McClelland then created visual "portfolios" comprising drawings, printed matter, and photographs in which she lifted text from Garrett's work, as well as the shapes of the poems themselves. These materials are displayed in loose, layered configurations on a bulletin board-like form on the wall, a structure that provides an alternative method for reading and, in turn, for interpretation. Together with videos and works on paper—several of which were created in Charlottesville for this exhibition—these portfolios create a visually compelling installation that inspires fresh consideration of the role of language, perception, conflict, and both one’s own history and history more broadly considered.
STrAY also includes a diverse group of works drawn from The Fralin collection by artists such as Käthe Kollwitz, Francisco de Goya, Larry Clark, and Sally Mann. These pieces, all selected by McClelland, will be in dialogue with her art and will provide a unique opportunity for visitors to simultaneously engage pieces from the collection in a new context while also studying the work of this important artist.

Based in New York City, McClelland has exhibited internationally since the early 1990s. She has produced paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and videos, in each case experimenting with the process and possibilities of each medium. Her art is featured in numerous public and private collections and she has received several grants and awards from prominent organizations and foundations.

Through May 26.

Traces of the Hand: Master Drawings from the Collection of Frederick and Lucy S. Herman

Jan 25, 2013 - May 26, 2013 12 PM - 5 PM

UVa Fralin Museum of Art, 155 Rugby Road / Charlottesville, VA 22904
Avid collectors since their college days, Frederick and Lucy S. Herman spent over fifty years building an impressive collection of more than 250 works on paper, a majority of which were generously donated to the Museum in 2006 and 2007 for the instruction of the University's students. Traces of the Hand displays a selection of drawings from this collection and celebrates the Hermans' achievement as discriminating collectors, highlighting areas in which the collection excels and which clearly correspond to their tastes and interests. These include social satire, portraiture, German Romanticism, and the depiction of the natural world through landscape and marine imagery.

Although the drawings in this show range in date from about 1530 to 1945 and represent a variety of artistic periods, the exhibition reveals one characteristic that unites them: their superior quality and visual interest. This exhibition also permits the publication of the results of student research on these drawings, carried out in seminars on the history and connoisseurship of drawings and prints taught by curator Lawrence O. Goedde. This research by both graduate and undergraduate students has resulted in new attributions and new identifications of subjects, and it has led students to a deeper appreciation of the highly varied purposes of drawings, as well as enhanced their understanding of the differing functions of specific drawings within an individual artist’s creative process.

Through May 26.

Corot to Cézanne: French Drawings from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Jan 25, 2013 - Jun 2, 2013 12 PM - 5 PM

UVa Fralin Museum of Art, 155 Rugby Road / Charlottesville, VA 22904
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon's generous gifts to the Commonwealth of Virginia include French, British sporting, and American paintings and sculpture on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, as well as over a thousand prints and drawings. This exhibition features highlights from their important collection of French drawings. The works span almost 150 years from the nineteenth to the early twentieth century, and include masters such as Géricault, Delacroix, Ingres, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas, Cézanne, and Picasso. A small group of works by other artists are included by virtue of their affinity with the aims of the French School during one of its most creative and innovative periods. The works on view range from formal academic studies to more experimental ones; they document change, not only across the period, but also within the work of individual artists like Corot.

In his autobiography, Paul Mellon wrote of his affinity for drawings such as these, noting "...preliminary drawings or sketches in oil or pastel often have an immediacy and emotional appeal far greater than the final canvas." It is hoped that visitors to this exhibition will share Mr. Mellon's enthusiasm.

Through June 2.

Viriginia Discovery Museum
Making Stuff at the Virginia Discovery Museum, from January 22 until February 5, 2011
The University of Virginia Department of Materials Science and Engineering will be at the Virginia Discovery Museum teaching visitors about Making Stuff, a series of demonstrations that show how scientists and engineers are using cutting edge technology to make new materials to improve our lives. Inspired by the NOVA documentary that airs on PBS beginning January 19, UVA students and Museum staff will lead visitors through various activities showing how Stronger, Smaller, Cleaner and Smarter materials are designed. The two-week event will kick off on January 22 with the day-long construction of a balloon model of a carbon nanotube to be displayed outside the Museum. Guests will also create ooblek, a Smarter material that is fun for the whole family. Children will also receive Secrets of a New World: The Right Materials, a book created by UVA students about materials science, while supplies last.
