Paul Jesperson thought he'd be spending his first season with the Virginia basketball team seated firmly on the bench.

Now he's part of a trio of first-year players who are contributing to the Cavaliers, as they're off to the program's best start in 30 years.

"It's been a blast so far," says Jesperson, who has appeared in all 10 games since having his redshirt pulled in December.

No. 16 Virginia enters Saturday's game at No. 21 Florida State at 18-3, and at 5-2 in the ACC, a game out of a three-way tie for first place.

"I thought that we would come out this year and do the things we're doing now," says another freshman forward, Darion Atkins. "But just, as it's actually happening right now, it's surreal. It's like, this is actually happening."

"This is what a lot of people, a lot of basketball players dream of," says the Cavaliers' third freshman, guard Malcolm Brogdon. "And I think it's a blessing that I've been able to make it to this level."

Brogdon has made the biggest impact in his first season on grounds. He's fifth on the team in minutes (456), fourth in scoring (6.3 ppg), and third in assists (32) as Tony Bennett's first option off the bench.

The December departures of sophomore KT Harrell and redshirt freshman James Johnson forced the Cavalier coaches to activate Jesperson. He has nine points and eight rebounds through his first 10 college games.

"It's been an adjustment, that's for sure," he says. "Going from redshirting, working on my personal development, to being on the team, trying to help them get better. And getting out there and earning good minutes for myself."

Atkins has also seen his role grow because of the two transfers -- and because of senior center Assane Sene's ankle injury last month. He's averaging 3.1 points and 2.6 rebounds in 16 games.

"At first I was one of five big men. Now I'm one of three," Atkins says. "My role has definitely changed. The coaches have told me, and I know for myself that I have to step up and, you know, bring it now."

Brogdon has noticed a change in the demeanor of his fellow first-years as they've gotten more comfortable on the floor.

"I think it's a confidence," he says. "I think the game is about confidence, especially at this level. And both of them, confidence has gone up. I think as each game goes on, both of them gain more confidence."

And all three freshmen agree -- the transition to college basketball has been made much easier by having each other to lean on.

"Me, Malcolm, and Darion are always looking out for each other, for sure," says Jesperson. "If one of us is going through a struggle, the other two are there to uplift him."

"I love Paul, and I love Malcolm," Atkins says. "I get along with them so well. From the time that we first met, up until right now, our chemistry is really good together."

"To have one, but two other guys that are going through the same things you're going through your first year of college basketball is a phenomenal advantage," agrees Brogdon. "I'm just glad those guys are here to go through it with me, honestly."
