A bill to force online retailers such as Amazon to collect the same sales taxes that mall discount stores and corner bookstores assess from their customers has won unanimous support from a key Senate committee.

Sen. Frank Wagner's bill would close a loophole that gigantic Internet merchants use to avoid collecting Virginia's 5 percent tax.

Supporters say it would boost Virginia's treasury by hundreds of millions of dollars annually merely by collecting taxes already on the books. They said it would also create a level playing field for traditional "brick-and-mortar" stores.

Five states already have similar laws in effect and nine others have agreements or laws about to take effect to collect online retailing taxes.

Neither Amazon nor any other Internet retailer spoke against the bill.

Did the state and Amazon make some kind of deal where they would not have to collect sales tax in Va. if they built a dist. center in Richmond and if that is the case I guess every other online business will have to collect sales tax but Amazon the Mega online store will not have to good for the customer of Amazon but bad for other online stores many of these online stores are very small businesses I would say that someone in Richmond must have a bunch of Amazon stock

So if we'll be paying the sales tax for on-line purchases, will the Dept. of Revenue get rid of the "Consumer Use Tax" line on our state taxes? You know, the line where you're supposed to report all your purchases when you did not pay VA sales tax? Just something to make VA resident's lives even more complicated!

Great, let's hook up with the other 5 states that are myopic enough to force out of state companies that sell on the internet to collect state sales tax. This is not the way a low-tax, right to work state like VA should behave, leave this to the union-controlled, sinking rust belt states, like Obama's Illinois.
