A Pittsylvania County man accused of shooting his neighbor because he thought the victim was a deer is facing a manslaughter charge.

Commonwealth's Attorney David Grimes tells the Danville Register and Bee that a county grand jury indicted 62-year-old Harry Hale on Tuesday. Hale also is charged with reckless handling of a firearm.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says 57-year-old Richie Pope was shot on Dec. 29 as he walked along a road near his home in the Chatham area. He died at a hospital in Danville.
