The Virginia House of Delegates has passed legislation repealing a requirement that girls receive a vaccine to prevent a virus that can cause cervical cancer.

State law mandates the human papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccination before girls reach sixth grade.

HPV is spread through sexual contact. Some conservative lawmakers believe the vaccine promotes casual premarital sex and say the state mandate usurps parental rights. But supporters of the current law say the vaccine can save lives and point out that the statute includes a liberal opt-out provision.

The House voted 62-34 Friday to pass the bill, sponsored by Republican Del. Kathy Byron of Campbell County.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where similar legislation died last year when Democrats controlled the chamber. Republicans now control the Senate.

HPV is linked to the increase in oral and throat cancers, not just cervical cancer. A recent study showed that 7% of US teens and adults (16 million)carry HPV in their mouths. I certainly do not promote casual sex, but I have to face reality, which is that ~70% of HS seniors admit that they have had sex. Unfortunately, many people think that oral sex is safe, because you can't get pregnant. But this is how HPV is spread. Whether the state mandates it or not, my children, male or female, will get the vaccine, just like they get other shots for polio and measles.

Repeal! Please provide the supporting documentation on you statement: "...the fact that an approved drug caused more diseases than it prevented..." as pertains to the HPV vaccine.

I hope they do repeal this, it should be a choice not requirement. As quick as the FDA is to approve drugs I fear the next lawyers commercial will say......If you have had the HPV vaccine in the years of 2007-2012 and have developed such diseases as.....please call us so that we can pretend that money will make the fact that an approved drug caused more diseases than it prevented all that much better!
