Thursday afternoon was hot and humid in Charlottesville but the sticky weather didn't keep people away from the Downtown Mall.

But around 5:00pm, a sudden storm ripped through the area. While the storm didn't leave much physical damage, it's the financial damage that making businesses on the Mall suffer.

Blue Light Grill says that the weather makes or breaks their business. "If it's really raining outside," bartender Josh Tracey says. "I would say our business is cut in half."

Across the street at stationary shop "rock paper scissors," co-owners Dani Antol and Heather McNulty agree.

"If it's sunny we obviously get more walk-in traffic," says Antol. "But if it's raining, the walk-in traffic is a bit low."

Not to mention the electricity. Most business operate on electronic cash registers, like Blue Light Grill. And rock paper scissors says they have to turn away customers if they lose power and are unable to run credit cards.

However, most businesses say for now, their economic vitality is in tact. For all business owners and shoppers, rain in Charlottesville is business as usual.
