Lifeguards closed the water to all swimmers at Virginia Beach Monday because of dangerous rip currents from Hurricane Danielle.
Although Hurricane Danielle is still hundreds of miles from the shore, the Category 3 storm is already creating dangerous swells and rip currents up and down the east coast.
Virginia Beach lifeguards say they rescued more than 100 swimmers from the strong rip currents on Saturday alone, including a 9-year-old boy.
"The rips are pulling as hard as we've seen all summer long. It is an extremely dangerous environment for even good swimmers. Deadly for bad swimmers," said Captain Tom Gill.
Swimmers are allowed to wade in the water, but can only go ankle deep.
