Rain Barrels could be the answer to water shortages, and the Rain Barrel Pilot Program was created by the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County to explore their value to the community.

One half an inch of rain collected on your roof can fill over six 55-gallon barrels. After a two inch rain storm in Central Virginia, one could collect 1,500 milk jugs full of water.

Conservation Specialist, Jennifer Patterson, says "[The program serves] to record how valuable the barrels are for our consumers and our climate. If you were able to capture that you would be able to water your landscape for quite a while."

The Albemarle County Service Authority is running a rebate program for all rain barrels that are purchased. Paige Mattson, of the Blue Ridge Eco Shop, says their barrels are $70 after the rebate.

With few mandatory water restrictions now and after this very dry summer, the City and County are encouraging everyone to take a closer look at how they use water.
