Edge-of-Space Camera

MIT students Justin Lee and Oliver Yeh constructed a Camera set up to take pictures in the stratosphere. No rockets, boosters or expensive control systems, just a helium filled weather balloon, a cheap camera, a GPS equipped cell phone, a Styrofoam beer cooler, some instant hand warmers to prevent the camera from freezing, and of course duct tape. The price tag $150.

The Edge-of-Space camera rose to around 93 thousand feet, so high that you can see the curvature of the earth. Just to give you an idea of how high that is, after the balloon popped the camera set up took 40 minutes to fall back to the ground.
