Behind the Scenes of Charlottesville Snow Removal

Snow removal crews will keep a close eye on the nearly 700 roads in Charlottesville.

During the snow, you see the public works trucks out salting and sanding. They've already pre-treated all primary and secondary roads in Charlottesville to coordinate their outdoor effort.

Crews are at work inside, too. Staff say their training room is set up as ground zero to monitor the weather, take calls and keep in contact with road crews.

They can track their trucks at work to see how long clearing takes them. And they can monitor temperatures of bridges, which are good indicators for the roads.

"Bridges are actually the priority before the primary routes," said Lauren Hildebrand, Charlottesville's director of utilities. "If those temperatures drop, we get out and pay special attention to the bridges because we don't want people jeopardizing their safety."

Public works crews will work 24 hours a day to clear the street. Staff say once the snow accumulates up to an inch, they start plowing primary roads. They stay on primary roads until the snow stops, then they hit secondary roads.
