Streets and highways that have been plowed are developing a new challenge for drivers -- potholes.
Some just rattle your car, others crunch your bones -- and your shock absorbers.
They're a pet peeve, and they're all over Charlottesville. Belmont Bridge is prone to them, so Public Works crews have been out all day patching them up so the potholes don't cause any more problems.
Public Works officials said they started filling potholes Thursday. Director Judy Mueller said there are about 200 potholes around Charlottesville. She hoped to fill about 75 total Thursday.
Mueller said potholes start to show up after a snowstorm because of the moisture underneath the asphalt. So Public Works tries to patch the potholes quickly.
"As we get into the freeze-thaw cycle -- and if you don't patch a pothole now -- it only gets bigger," Mueller said.
They're on Belmont Bridge, Route 29 South, Hydraulic Road and many other places. But Mueller said she hopes to have all of them gone by the end of the week.
She said Public Works has patched so many potholes Thursday that they've run out of material. So, she said, they'll have to start again tomorrow.
