Crews Work to Repair Split Truss that Caused Sagging Roof

February 17, 2010

Crews are working to repair a sagging roof in a Charlottesville business damaged by the recent snowstorm.

Crews have cleared most of the snow off the roof at 206 Market St. The 12 inches that had been there caused a truss to split. Workers said it will take a couple days to repair.

The Charlottesville Fire Department evacuated the exercise studio Tuesday, but now that fire fighters are gone, no one is allowed inside the building except for work crews.

Lee Marraccini, the co-owner of the building, said there's a large hole in the ceiling and is exposing a split truss. For the next few days, crews will be in and out repairing the truss with both wooden and steel beams.

Right now, Marraccini said they learned from this situation and they'll do more to prevent this from happening again.

"Looking on the positive side, if this happens again, we'll try to get some snow removal up there," Marraccini said.

Right now, he said, the biggest issue is just making sure the area is safe. Once that happens, they'll be able to open for business, which they hope could happen later Wednesday.
