Snowy Winter Extends Va. Girl Scout Cookie Sale

March 10, 2010

The Girl Scout Cookie Sale in Virginia has been extended until April 11.

The 2010 cookie season began January 1 for Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council (GSVSC). Almost immediately, the 36 counties served by the council were hit by weeks of snow, sleet and freezing rain. As a result, many troops had to cancel their booth sales and other outside promotional activities. So the sale, which had been scheduled to end March 31, will now continue until April 11.

The cookie sale is the largest fund-raising activity of the year for Girl Scouts. Of the $3.50 cost of a box of Girl Scout cookies, just 91 cents goes to the bakery. The rest stays with the troop and the council.

Cookie proceeds help fund hundreds of programs for the girls, training for volunteers, and scholarships for those who can’t afford membership fees and program costs. They also allow GSVSC to maintain three program centers: Icimani Adventure Center in Roanoke, Camp Sacajawea in Lynchburg, and Camp Sugar Hollow in Crozet.

Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council serves 10,500 girls and has more than 3,500 adult volunteers.

For information about cookies, contact Arlene Wilhelm, Virginia Skyline’s product sales manager, at 540-777-5105.
