Report: Virginia Beach at Risk for Hurricane Storm Surge

March 29, 2010

A new report says Virginia Beach ranks as one of the top places in the nation at risk from hurricane-related storm surge.

A study expected to be released Monday by The First American Corp. looked at 13 metropolitan areas along the Atlantic coast and Gulf of Mexico.

According to the study, a Category 1 hurricane could do more than $7 billion worth of damage to the area. A strike by a Category 5 hurricane could create five times more damage.

Despite the potential damage, the National Weather Service says a hurricane would have to take an unusual track to make landfall in Virginia.
