Thursday marks the 50th anniversary of what is called "the satellite that forever changed weather forecasting."
On this date in 1960, the first weather satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It's called the TIROS-1 or Television Infrared Observation Satellite." Its first image was a fuzzy band of clouds over the Eastern U.S.
Since then, dozens of new weather satellites have been launched. The newest pair was launched last year and can provide a complete picture of the globe every six hours.
For more information about the TIROS-1 visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Web Site.
