The President Tuesday declared a major disaster exists in the Commonwealth of Virginia and ordered Federal aid to supplement the Commonwealth and local recovery efforts in the area struck by severe winter storms and snowstorms during the period of February 5-11, 2010.

Federal funding is available to the Commonwealth and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storms and snowstorms in the counties of Albemarle, Appomattox, Arlington, Augusta, Buckingham, Caroline, Clarke, Craig, Culpeper, Essex, Fairfax, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Frederick, Greene, Highland, King George, Loudoun, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, Prince William, Rappahannock, Shenandoah, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Tazewell, and Warren, and the independent cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Manassas, Manassas Park, Waynesboro, and Winchester.

In addition, assistance is available to the Commonwealth and eligible local governments on a cost-sharing basis for emergency protective measures, including snow assistance, for a continuous 48-hour period during or proximate to the incident period.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for the entire Commonwealth. FEMA said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the Commonwealth and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
