Strong storms rolled through Charlottesville, Albemarle County and central Virginia around 3:30pm Thursday afternoon knocking down trees and power lines, and leaving thousands of residents without power.

As of 11 a.m. Thursday, Dominion Virginia Power is reporting 2,000 homes and businesses, most of them in Charlottesville, remain without power. This is down from more than 10,000 without power immediately following the storms.

Dominion is reporting 112 locations in the area were damaged by the storms, and crews and contractors are in town from around the state to fix the damage. Officials said power should be restored to everyone by 10 p.m. Thursday.

Officials also said it's still not too late to report an outage by calling 1-866-DOM-HELP.

Charlottesville police tell CBS19 that at least six homes have fallen trees on them in Charlottesville. One man came home to find a tree had fallen on his elderly neighbors' home on Calhoun Street. Thinking they had been crushed, he tried to enter the home but luckily, no one was injured.

Trees and power lines are down across Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville, and traffic is slow due to stoplight outages.

At one point, a tree fell on a car entering the Route 250 Bypass from the Dairy Road on-ramp in Charlottesville. The Dairy Road on-ramp was closed to traffic for a period of time but is back open. No one was injured.

The Charlottesville Fire Department says they've received calls of trees on power lines, vehicles and homes but have no reported injuries. The Fire Department says they will be working all night to clean up the mess left by the storm.
