You may remember, a few months back when bread, milk and snow shovels flew off the shelves in advance of winter storms. This week, emergency crews say it's just as important to stay ahead of the heat.
The Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad advises pre-hydration in the mornings, before the heat of the day. They also suggest keeping an umbrella or big hat handy to offer as much shade as possible.
"That's one of the big things we're concerned about with people working in public safety, at large events, be it a fire or a large motor vehicle accident where all our people are out. We're telling them the same thing we're telling the public, which is stay hydrated and make sure your out of the sun unless you absolutely have to be," said Assistant Chief-Operations of CARS, Benjamin Sojka.
Sojka says CARS has already had several heat emergency related calls, many of which were in the late afternoon, from people working outside too long. They're checking to make sure trucks are supplied with things like cold packs and towels to be wetted down.
Sojka warns if you're feeling dizzy and dry, you may be dealing with a significant heat emergency and need to call 9-1-1.
