One of Charlottesville's "Art In Place" sculptures was badly damaged by the storm that swept through the city Thursday evening.
The "Whale Tail" stands along the Route 250 Bypass. It shows the back half of a sperm whale. But the tail broke off during winds estimated at more than 50 miles per hour.
Local artist Tom Givens created the artwork out of discarded wood that he says he harvested locally.
The "Art In Place" website indicates the sculpture is still owned by Givens and leased by the City.
