City Councilors and Beach Club Members Battle for Land

March 19, 2012

During a Charlottesville city council meeting Monday evening, members from the non-profit Fry's Spring Beach Club came to discuss their disapproval of a potential decision by the city to take away a piece of land.

The city has initiated a project to improve Old Lynchburg Road by improving the storm drains and putting in a sidewalk and a bike lane. In order for the project to begin, the city would need to purchase a piece of land from the beach club. Members from the club asked for $350, 000, the city has offered about $25, 000.

The city says if an agreement is not made then they will claim eminent domain and take the land from the beach club.

"I understand the City has to get this project done but railroading the Club in this way is really unacceptable," said one speaker.

Councilors hope to come up with an agreement with members from the beach club.
