As temperatures continue to dip below the freezing line, Wintergreen and Massanutten are gearing up for a big opening weekend on Friday.
With ski season nearly here, snow groomer Roger Newport will call Wintergreen home for the next few months. “I work 9pm to 10am everyday. Wintergreen is your real home and your house is your second home during the winter,” he joked.
While the slopes haven't opened yet, everyone at Wintergreen is working around-the-clock in anticipation of Friday's opening.
“As you can tell, we've been making snow like crazy since Old Man Winter got here, and the place looks fabulous! We're making snow and we're getting ready for a big opening on Friday,” said Jay Roberts, VP of Resort Operations.
It's Newport's job to groom the man-made snow and smooth it out for the next day of skiing. After 22 years in the snowplow, it isn't hard to guess his favorite season of the year.
“Winter time! Snow making time! Basically this time."
The resort's high-tech artificial snow will mix with the two inches of natural snow they picked up over the weekend to make Wintergreen a winter wonderland.
