McDonnell Issues Emergency Declaration after Storm

June 30, 2012

Gov. Bob McDonnell has called a state of emergency after a storm killed six people in the state and knocked out electric power for hundreds of thousands.

McDonnell says Virginians face a dangerous situation as many try to cope with triple-digit heat without air-conditioning. He's urging Virginians to look out for each other.

The governor's emergency declaration Saturday activated 300 National Guard troops to help the state recover from winds of up to 80 miles an hour that knocked down trees and power lines and closed about 250 secondary roads. McDonnell said the fatalities - two each in Fairfax, Albemarle and Bedford counties - were caused by fallen trees.

Dominion says it's unclear when power will be fully restored, but residents should be prepared for long outages.
