Severe Storms Pass Through Area for Second Straight Day

Central Virginia is no longer under a Tornado Watch. The watch for Charlottesville, Albemarle, Orange, Fluvanna, Nelson, Culpeper, Madison and Louisa counties was canceled at 11:15am Thursday.

At least three tornadoes touched down in Central Virginia Wednesday night. Officials are investigating a possible storm-related fatality in Halifax County. One tornado caused significant damage in Goochland County, near Oilville and officials say several homes were damaged by a tornado that touched down in Farmville.

Governor Bob McDonnell Thursday declared a state of emergency in response to the severe weather. Initial reports indicated the violent storms killed at least eight people in Virginia, but that number was reduced to five Thursday afternoon. As many as 30,000 customers without electricity.

For parts of Wednesday night, the majority of the area was under a Tornado Warning including the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Orange County, Fluvanna County and Louisa County.

Weather watchers reported seeing hail up to the size of half dollars and strong winds throughout the area.

There were also reports of a preliminary tornado in Louisa County near Ferncliff around 8 p.m. Viewers also reported seeing funnel clouds near Gordonsville and Zion Crossroads.
