Virginia Declares State of Emergency After Flooding

September 9, 2011

Gov. Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency in response to flooding triggered by rains from Tropical Storm Lee's remnants, which submerged roads and killed three people in Virginia.

The declaration Friday authorizes state agencies to help localities in responding to problems related to several straight days of rainfall and helps deploy staffing, equipment and supplies to the affected areas.

The flooding left people stranded in cars, submerged and washed out roads along the Interstate 95 corridor in the eastern part of the state. Authorities say the flooding contributed to three deaths, two people in Fairfax County and one in Southampton County.
