Weather Service Confirms 15 Twisters in Virginia

The number of confirmed tornadoes from Virginia's recent outbreak is growing.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management said Sunday the National Weather Service has confirmed 15 tornadoes in the recent outbreak.

Washington and Halifax counties were hit hardest by the storms that churned through the state last week. Five people were killed and at least 75 injured.

Of the 15 tornadoes, eight of them were EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with estimated winds of up to 110 miles per hour. Three of the tornadoes were EF-O, with winds of up to 85 miles per hour. Three others were EF-2 on the scale, with winds of up to 135 miles per hour. One tornado was rated an EF-3, with winds of up to 165 miles per hour.
